Nov 30,  · Shoes's fans tend to fall into two camps: many regard their early BLACK VINYL SHOES as their best album, while others (of which I am a member) prefer their two masterpieces TONGUE TWISTER and PRESENT TENSE/5(11).

As Brian wrote in his review, all the tracks on this single disc collection are early demos that the band did, songs that later turned up on the first two major label albums, Present Tense" and "Tongue Twister," both of which are classics of American Power Pop. Simply magnificent pop songs/5(7).

May 31,  · Double Exposure featured the demos for both Present Tense and Tongue Twister. It contained every song on both of those albums plus a few others that didn't make the cut. The third release was the first Cherry Red boxset called Black Vinyl Shoes Anthology which features the first three self-recorded albums, One In Versailles, Bazooka and Black Vinyl Shoes.

The first of Shoes' three Elektra albums, Present Tense is almost a happy accident in ways -- not that the band hadn't already shown its particular approach beautifully with earlier efforts, but at a time when major labels were trying to figure out what punk and new wave could provide, Shoes just found a perfect balance. Recorded in England and co-produced by the band, Present Tense didn't end.

Present Tense is a power pop charmer from back in the heyday of New Wave and probably their best album (although you could make a case for 's Black Vinyl Shoes). Tongue Twister is a later and lesser effort of more interest to hard-core fans. Apparently, the only way to get a copy of Present Tense now is on this twofer/5(23).
